Batley Cemetery Chapel had been closed by the authority.

But, after an appeal from the Batley Cemetery Support Group, the decision was reversed, and funerals can once again take place there.

The petition was put to the council by Bill Fox, the chairman of Batley Cemetery Support Group.

Mr Fox said he was delighted that the council had decided to reverse the closure decision.

He also pointed out that the public at large had an early chance to inspect the facilities.

They are welcome to visit from 9.30am to 2pm Sunday December 14, when the group will stage a Christmas coffee morning which would provide refreshments and operate a number of stalls.

Mr Fox said: “I would urge the public to consider the chapel for use at funerals and to support any social events being staged there at different times.

“It is a way of ensuring that the buildings and their availability continues.”

Two funerals had been staged there since the council agreed to let the support group back into the building.

Bill Fox added: “They (funerals) are open to any denomination.

“I would urge any grieving family to ask their undertakers to inquire about their availability.”
