Health scare spurs on Julie to quit habit

A grandmother says she is less stressed, more healthy and has more time to spend with her grandchildren after quitting smoking.

Julie Stanley, from Dewsbury, stopped smoking after she suffered a mini stroke in September last year.

Just eight days after her health scare, she referred herself to the Locala Stop Smoking team, and said she would not have succeeded without their support.

Julie is now backing their campaign, which is supported by Kirklees Council, to encourage more people to seek help quitting.

Julie said: “If you are thinking of stopping smoking, you have got to put 100 per cent effort into it with them. If you know you can minimise your risk of a stroke you should stop smoking immediately. You never know what’s around the corner.

“I now have more money to help pay utility bills, I’m less stressed and I have been spending more time with my grandchildren, kissing and cuddling them more without the worry that they will be effected by second hand smoke.”

Julie set her quit date for October 1 last year, the start of the NHS campaign Stoptober, and has remained smoke free since.
