A hot datewith somefiery food

lovers of spicy food will be flocking to Dewsbury soon as a brand new one-day market hits town.

Selling food from all over the world, the Fiery Food Market takes a bow on Saturday May 21, timed to coincide with the final day of the town’s second Beer and Cider Festival at the town hall.

Fiery food will be available from 9am to 5pm, offering a range of hot and cold dishes to take away or eat on the spot.

There will also be cookery demonstrations, live music and face painters.

Members of Dewsbury’s new Town Team will be there to tell people more about its work – you can’t miss them, they’ll be wearing Mexican-style ponchos kindly made by people with learning difficulties at Ponderosa Rural Theraputic Centre in Heckmondwike.

The market has been put together by Kirklees Council and aims to add to the vibrancy of Dewsbury. There will also be donkey rides, facepainting and fairground rides for children.

Coun Paul Kane of Dewsbury Regeneration Board said: “The beer festival attracts thousands of people into the town so we are delighted to boost its appeal by creating this new market and arranging extra entertainment.”

The food stalls will be ranged along Foundry Street, with the cookery demonstrations in the market area. Entertainment including competitions will take place across the town centre.

Last year’s beer and cider festival drew more than 3,000 visitors into Dewsbury over the three days it took place – so popular beer ran out towards the end. It is expected even more people will be coming to the town this year.

Town centre manager Andrew Sloman said: “This will be a relatively small event, but we hope to build it up to something much bigger in years to come.

“We have some really vibrant stalls booked, with chilli plants, different types of food and other exciting wares.”

l 10.30am: A chilli sauce ideal for serving with a range of meats.

l 11am: Quesadillas with various fillings.

l 11.30am: Spicy meatballs and lamb burgers prepared by Coddy’s Farm using local pastes from Daisy Bank.

l 12.30pm: Know your chillis – an introduction by Juan Galindo.

l 1.30pm: Chilli chocolate truffles by Carl Turner of the Ministry of Chocolate.

l 2.15pm: Gurasharon Kaur makes prawn and pepper curry, pakoras and onion bhajis.
