In an email sent this afternoon from Kirklees Council’s department for Place, Mirfield’s Kirklees councillors were told that four sites, including the Mirfield Town Council offices in Huddersfield Road, are part of Kirklees’s “asset disposal” plans for the forthcoming year.

Also listed in the plan were the St Paul’s Road Depot and other sites at Flash Lane and Stocks Bank Road. Each site was earmarked for either commercial use and/or housing.

Coun Kath Taylor (Con, Mirfield) said: “I am heartbroken – we were promised by Kirklees Council that we would not be made homeless.

“Other areas that have wanted to set up their own town councils have been coming to us for advice on how to do it, but how can we advise anyone now?”

The sites are set to be included on the agenda for a Kirklees cabinet meeting on December 16.
