Kirklees Tory leader’s son injured in Afghanistan

THE soldier son of a local councillor has been seriously injured in Afghanistan in a bomb blast which claimed the life of his best friend.

Pte Matthew Light, 19, whose father is Birstall and Birkenshaw councillor Robert Light, was leading a foot patrol in Helmand Province on Friday when he was caught in a bomb blast with Pte John King, also 19, who sadly died.

Pte Light suffered shrapnel wounds to his legs and was left totally deaf in one ear, possibly permanently. He was rushed to the army hospital at Camp Bastion for emergency surgery.
