Shock plans by Kirklees to sell off Mirfield’s historic town council offices were unveiled in a leaked email to the Reporter Series late last year, with town councillors up in arms at the plans.

But now Coun Vivien Lees Hamilton (Con) said she wanted Kirklees to do the right thing and rent the offices out to local businesses, rather than sell them off.

She added: “We have already had interest from people who would like to relocate to our offices.

“There is enough office space to help people develop their businesses, and to bring some business back into the community.”

She added the town council had already had discussions with Kirklees over the possibility of an asset transfer for the building.

“This is something we are definitely going to have a look at,” she added. “We had a full and frank discussion with an officer from Kirklees and it was very positive.”
