Man in court over Wakefield take away worker wounding

Joshua Balmforth, 20, is charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Haq Nawaz Rasool, 38, on Westgate at 4.15am on Saturday, December 13.

Wakefield magistrates heard today (Monday) how Mr Rasool has suffered life-threatening injuries.

Balmforth, of Thornhill Lees, Dewsbury, did not enter a plea to the charge.

Emma Covington, defending, applied for bail.

Magistrate Malcolm Clowson committed the case to Leeds Crown Court for trial.

Balmforth was remanded in custody for bail to be considered by a judge.

Police are still urging witnesses to come forward. Officers made four arrests following the alleged assault. A 21-year-old man from Mirfield, a 22-year-old from Leeds and a second 20 year-old man have been released on police bail.

Detective Superintendent Nick Wallen, from West Yorkshire Police’s Protective Services (Crime), said: “We are continuing our enquiries to identify all those involved in the incident and we expect to make further arrests.”
