Officers were called to Brooklyn Road by the ambulance service and discovered the local man who had suffered a number of stab wounds.

It is believed that an altercation had taken place at a house party on Brooklyn Road and the victim, who was at another address further down the street, had been asked for help.

The man was then approached in the street by a group of men and women and a further altercation took place during which he received fatal injuries.

Det Chief Insp Simon Bottomley of the Force’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said: “This was a vicious attack which resulted in a man losing his life. At this stage of the investigation we believe that following some disorder at a house party, the victim had been on his way to help. As a result, he was set upon by what we believe to be a group of five men and women and subsequently received stab wounds to his back.
