NOT only is hammer thrower Sarah Holt carrying the Olympic flame when it visits the area on Monday, but she is also in with a chance of taking part in the summer’s Olympic games.
The 25-year-old from Cleckheaton is taking part in Olympic trials this weekend, and will be going to the European championships the weekend after.
“Taking part in the Olympics is a bit bigger than carrying the torch,” she said.
“I’m really happy that I’ve been picked as a torch bearer and I’m looking forward to Monday. I’m going to be running past Dewsbury and District Hospital, where I was born.”
Sarah, a former Whitcliffe Mount pupil and one of the top three all time junior hammer throwers, was nominated to carry the Olympic flame through Lloyds TSB’s Local Heroes scheme.
She trained at Spenborough Athletics Club before going to the University of Loughborough, where she gained a degree in geography and sport science.
Tomorrow, meet torch carriers Rachel Haigh and Liam Brentley at www.batleynews.co.uk.
