Northorpe Hall was transformed into the setting for a village fete style wedding on a beautiful summer’s day.

Shaun Mallia and Charlotte Wakeley’s wedding had a distinctly handmade feel as every guest made or contributed something, large or small.

Apple bobbing, a coconut shy and even a kissing booth kept guests entertained as they ran sack races, hula-hooped and relaxed on hay bails.

The couple, of Sands Lane, Mirfield, were married at St John’s Church in Upper Hopton by the Rev Helen Butler on Saturday, before heading to Northorpe.

Teacher Charlotte, 28, sketched out an idea of how she’d like the outside to look to friends Dave Jackson, Luke Pope and Tom Greenwood, but never imagined they’d pull it off. The friends made the kissing booth, photo booth and coconut shy themselves.

“It was the most unbelievable day of my life,” she said. “I was absolutely astounded by how beautiful it looked.

“Everybody contributed or made something. Everyone was so generous with their time and effort.”

Everything down to the place names were handmade or used from somewhere else. Even the blankets were loaned from Dewsbury and District Hospital.

Anne Mallia and Charlotte made the bunting and table runners, while neighbours and friends saved jam jars
for months to decorate the venue.

Charlotte’s grandma Betty Brabin made the cakes. Birstall Craft Club donated some of the cake stands, and Mandy O’Donnell, from The Craft and Hobby Store, Heckmondwike, made the invitations and decorated the shoes.

And Charlotte hopes future couples will be able to benefit from her handmade vision.

Her friends are hoping to hire out the props they used for weddings, fun fairs or children’s events.

“It would be such a shame to keep it all in storage when we had such an amazing time,” added Charlotte.

The bridesmaids were Kerina Helliwell, Joanna Mallia, Grace Hodson, Samantha Hartill and Helen Butler.

The best man was Phil Hodgson and the ushers were Alex Wakeley, Luke Pope and Tom Greenwood. The groomsman was Dave Jackson.
