Motor company marks 90 years

A car sales company has celebrated 90 years in the business.

Clemo Motors, in Bradford Road, Moorend, Cleckheaton, marked the occasion with a 90-candle fruitcake, baked and decorated by sales assistant Sarah Roberts.

Managing director Richard Smith said: “It is a milestone and we look forward to celebrating our centenary in 10 years time. We will have to have an even bigger cake.”

Mr Smith was pleased the company had been part of the local economy for so long.

He said: “To me it is great to have been serving the public of Spen for 90 years.

“There have been changes to the business in those years and we have had to respond to the different demands of our customers.”

Mr Smith has worked at the company since 1987.

The business has occupied the same site, which had just undergone a £100,000 refurbishment, since 1924 when it initially sold Rover, Hillman and Morris Cowley cars.

Today it deals in Fiat, Jeep and Abarth vehicles.

Mr Smith invited Ladies European Tour golfer Georgina Simpson and Cleckheaton Rugby Club chairman Neil Gillan, who have both received sponsorship from the firm, to the celebration.

Invitations were also extended to service manager Andy Farrell, who has worked for the company for 22 years, and former general manager Gary Hall, who retired in 2009 after 46 years of service.
