The Kirklees area has once again demonstrated how fantastic its parks are, with six being awarded a green flag award at a ceremony at Dewsbury Town Hall this week.
Greenhead Park, Oakwell Hall, Wilton Park, Crow Nest Park, Beaumont Park and Castle Hill all received the internationally recognised award. The award demonstrates excellent teamwork; with local authorities and community groups working together to make parks and greenspaces fabulous places across the country.
Oakwell Hall Country Park has also received the much coveted additional Green Heritage Site Accreditation for the management of the historic features.
The parks are among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that received a prestigious Green Flag this year – the mark of a quality park or green space.
This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.
At the awards ceremony community awards were also presented to Upper Hopton, and West End Park. PPG Industries (Johnstones Paint) who actively support community groups in Birstall and Batley also received a business award.
Councillor Naheed Mather Cabinet Member for Communities and the Environment said: “I would like to thank all those involved in making our parks fantastic places to visit for their truly inspiring dedication. From the friends groups and volunteers to the site staff, it is your commitment, inspiration and enthusiasm that has helped the parks successfully achieve these awards.
From Oakwell Hall where country park assistants Tony Sims and Les Hughes and country park officer Amanda Walker have worked hard to get the country park its 14th Green Flag; to Castle Hill where the tower team has achieved its first: There are so many people who show their dedication to making these places beautiful, and accessible that I can’t name them all. With summer upon us I would encourage everyone to visit their local park or greenspace they really are wonderful places to spend time.”
International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme, with more Green Flags awarded this year than last year.”
“Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We are proud to have so many wonderful green spaces in the UK for people to enjoy, and hope that next year, we award even more flags.”
