Obituary: Stanley was a real Batley champion

Stanley Beaumont was well known throughout the town and will be fondly remembered by the hundreds of pupils he taught at Batley Boys’ High School.

Born in 1931 in Hanging Heaton, Mr Beaumont was a founder member of Shaw Cross Boys’ Club.

He worked for the Dewsbury Reporter as a printer and managed a Sunday paper business which was well known in Mount Pleasant.

He married Dorothy in 1953 and played professional rugby league for Castleford until the arrival of his two daughters.

Mr Beaumont played cricket all over Yorkshire while studying art at teacher training college.

His first teaching post was at Batley Boys and he always said that he never wanted to teacher anywhere else. He spent 25 years there and constantly fought the cause of underprivileged children. Mr Beaumont helped build the Country Activity Centre in Settle, allowing local children to have a taste of the countryside and also set up adult literacy classes at Park Road School.

His no-nonsense approach was much admired by colleagues and pupils alike.

After retirement he joined and became president of Batley Probus and pursued his lifelong love of gardening.

He was always cheerful with people from all walks of life and will be much missed by all who knew him.

Mr Beaumont leaves his wife, Dorothy, two daughters, Linda and Moira, and two grandchildren, Josh and Sam.

He died peacefully last Thursday.

His funeral will take place at Dewsbury Crematorium on Thursday December 18, 1.15pm.
