Painting towns red

THOUSANDS of poinsettia plants have been placed in council buildings to create some festive cheer.

The council’s plant nursery in Huddersfield has produced nearly 3,000 plants to provide colourful Christmas decoration for stages, foyers and other public areas.

The plants have been growing since June when, as plugs, they took up only a corner of the giant greenhouse at the nursery - by the end of their growing, they almost filled it!

A small number - around 75 of each - of pink and white poinsettias have been grown to provide contrast in the displays. The rest are red which nurseryman David Nero said was the colour most associated with Christmas and therefore the most popular.
