Pam Scales, the incoming president of the Rotary Club of Cleckheaton and District, has been producing feminine hygiene kits while in isolation –tackling the difficult situation faced by young women.

Funded by the Rotary Club and Cleckheaton Inner Wheel, many of the kits are usually sent to developing or war-torn countries such as Kenya, Romania and Yemen.

However, as recently highlighted by media reports, the coronavirus pandemic has had a detrimental effect on teenage girls and women in Britain.

With schools closed, shortages, and disrupted supply chains, it was reported that three in 10 girls have struggled to access or afford sanitary products.

As a consequence, Pam has concentrated her efforts in distributing feminine hygiene kits to the Batley Care and Drop-in Centre and the Batley and Cleckheaton Food Banks. The kits proved to be much needed and she has been asked to provide more.

The kits consist of panties, washcloth, pads and a carry bag for soiled items which are all packed into a drawstring bag.

Pam said: “Fortunately I purchased materials needed to make the kits before lockdown.

“The crisis has brought to light that period poverty is a hidden problem not only abroad but in the UK as well.

“I am grateful for the continued support of Cleckheaton Rotary and Inner Wheel in order that we can help girls and women in the local community at this very difficult time.”
