Police chief visits to tackle town issues

West Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns-Williamson visited the town to meet local officers and saw what is being done to tackle local residents’ concerns.

He also visited sheltered housing accommodation for the elderly where he chatted to the residents and attended a meeting with Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) and Batley and Spen MP, Jo Cox.

A visit to Oakenshaw followed where he watched speed checks being carried out after complaints about how fast motorists drive in the area.

Mr Burns-Williamson said: “Visits like this are extremely important to me as I get to speak to local police officers and PCSOs about the area and the local concerns they pick up on from the community when out and about on patrol.

“Once I know what the problem is I can do whatever is needed to work with partners to find solutions.

“Tackling speeding is one such issue.

“People have told the police that speeding in Oakenshaw is a problem so we are taking action to address it.

“I also enjoy meeting people, talking to them and finding out what matters to them the most and I was able to do that when out and about in Batley and when I visited the sheltered housing accommodation.”

Jo Cox said: “These visits from Mark are always positive and very useful. Crime and policing issues are always emotive issues for local people but getting the chance to talk directly to the police commissioner is incredibly valuable. Mark is always willing to listen, work closely with other agencies and take action which I know residents welcome. It is important that those elected to represent and serve local people are in touch and hearing people’s concerns and experiences first hand.”
