Investigating officer PC Jade Snaith said: “The victim boarded the 9.22pm Northern Rail service at Doncaster, found a seat and placed her bag, containing a Sony Ericsson mobile phone, an iPhone 4 and a substantial amount of cash, on the seat next to her, by the window.

“She left the train at Bentley at around 9.25pm inadvertently leaving her bag behind.

“Another passenger who was walking down the aisle, spotted the bag and sat down next to it. He then rifled through the bag and placed items from it into his pockets. He then left the train at Wakefield Westgate at around 9.50pm.”

Officers believe the man in the image could have vital information about what happened and urge him or anyone who recognises him to come forward to assist officers with their enquiries.
