Voters on election day who forget to wear a mask – or to take their own pencil – can take comfort from the knowledge that staff at polling stations will be able to help out.

Kirklees Council has confirmed that masks will be available at the 190-plus polling stations it operates across the borough.

And whilst electors are encouraged to turn up with their own method of filling in ballot papers, pens and pencils will also be available for those that forget.

Local elections on May 6 – which is also the same day as the West Yorkshire Metro Mayor election – will be markedly different this year as local authorities like Kirklees observe stringent Covid-19 guidelines and introduce revised procedures.

The council has done thorough risk assessments on all its polling stations to ensure that voters are able to cast votes in a socially-distanced and safe way.

That means limiting the number of voters in some polling stations, operating one-way systems, offering sanitiser, undertaking regular cleaning and installing desk-top perspex screens.

Voters will be encouraged to bring their own pen or pencil to vote and, unless the voter has a medical exemption, face coverings must be worn inside polling stations in line with national law.

Across the borough the locations of 26 of the council’s 194 polling stations have changed this year. Where that has happened voters have been written to. The locations of new polling stations are also featured on their polling cards.

The council says signage will go up on the usual polling stations not being used with instructions on where people need to go.

The council also plans to use 35 schools from across the district on polling day. They range from primaries to academies.
