Poppy cash could top close to £20k after big year

While some of the money that was pledged still needs to be collected, the group believes it has raised more than £18,000 this year for the legion.

Tim Wood, a member of the legion and organiser of last month’s remembrance parade, said he was pleased with the involvement.

“We have not yet got a final result,” he said. “But last year was our best ever year – we raised £13,500 – and we have already broken that record. We expect to break it by at least £5,000.

“It is great that people have remembered and they have given to the Royal British Legion, so many years since it was started.

“This year, I set myself a target that we would raise more than £15,000, so I am very proud.”

He said a few more payments for commemorative wreaths had to be collected before the total could be announced.

The Legion set up the Mirfield Remembrance Parade, which last month attracted thousands of spectators and was one of the biggest parades outside London.

Other fundraising activities held this year included the selling of nearly 1,000 special crocheted poppies by Carol Rodwell.

The British Legion is a charity that was set up in 1920 to help families and wounded veterans.
