£150k scheme to improve Kirklees’ parks

The council’s cabinet agreed the Streetscene - Parks Capital Plan at a meeting on Tuesday.

As part of the plan it will now spend £36,000 on play areas and £56,000 on resurfacing, access works and planting at park’s across the district.

Coun Steve Hall, cabinet member for planning, highways and open spaces said: “What we are wanting to do is make all of the park’s up to a safe standard.

“This investment is all part of a bigger plan to make our parks attractive for people to visit and enjoy.”

The scheme will see £10,000 worth of improvements to woodland paths at Wilton Park, in Batley and the path around the war memorial in Crow Nest Park, Dewsbury will be resurfaced.

A total of £21,000 will also be spent on improving sports facilities including new rugby posts and football nets.

Coun Hall said: “Something that’s very important is health and wellbeing and part of our plan is to get people out and get them walking and taking part in physical activity.

“This latest investment is all part of the bigger plan to ease the burden on the NHS and health services.

“Everything we’re doing ties in and our parks are something we are passionate about.”

As part of the plan, the council will also invest £36,000 on resurfacing and fencing on sports pitches as part of the Young People’s Facilities Improvements Programme.

A report to the cabinet meeting said: “Without this investment facilities would have to be removed with a loss to local communities.”
