Rangers’ charity bid gets Heckmondwike singer in the charts.

A SONG by a Heckmondwike writer which is being used by Glasgow Rangers to raise money for charity has hit number 28 in the charts - on the day it was released.

Sammy King’s Penny Arcade has been sung by the Scottish team’s fans for years in the stands.

Each year supporters release a charity single for the Erskine Hospital, which cares for retired servicemen and women, and chose Penny Arcade for their 2011 campaign.

Sammy re-recorded the song, made popular in the 1960s by singing legend Roy Orbison, and has pledged all the royalties from the downloads to the charity.

The song was released for download today on iTunes - and has already reached number 28 in the charts.

Sammy said if the song stays in the top 40 until Wednesday, it will be played on BBC Radio 1.

Glasgow Rangers are hoping the song will get to number one and are running a Facebook campaign to push it up the charts.
