Singing praises of £10k Lottery cash

A £10,000 cash injection from the Big Lottery Fund has allowed a Cleckheaton-based charity to start a community choir.

The grant was handed to Stanley’s Training Project, which teaches life skills to people with learning difficulties and those who find it hard to access education, training or employment.

The group has recently moved to 23A Westgate, Cleckheaton, where their first singing session got off to a full-voiced start.

Founder Sara Gill said: “The funding is absolutely fantastic and will allow us to effectively widen our offering to support more groups within the community across Kirklees.

“By giving people the skills to help themselves and others, we create a better community for all.”

The project’s main aim is to improve the community by getting the people they support into paid or voluntary employment by giving them the confidence to work independently and provide a service, combining food, arts and music.

Alongside the choir, Stainley’s Training Project hosts courses like first aid, basic food hygiene and manual handling, arts sessions and weekly “activity cafés.”
