Visitors enjoyed pig racing, a comedy car show, live music and all the traditional trappings of an agricultural show.

Committee chairwoman Karen Bullivant said: “We had a brilliant day. The weather was beautiful until about 4pm.

“We used every little space in that field. Our ethos is we want to provide an entertaining day for all the family.

“It was great to see so many smiling faces and people seeing old friends they only meet up with each year at the show. It’s a true community event.”

Stalls selling food and drink lined the showground, while guests from far and wide watched the variety of entertainment and competitions throughout the day.

The famous tug of war evening attracted a team from North Yorkshire’s RAF Leeming but the prize was ultimately taken by rugby league club Mirfield Stags. Mrs Bullivant said: “The tug-of-war was my personal favourite bit – it’s become a hotly contested issue!

“We pull people from all round and about but really we are aiming it at the people of Mirfield and local area.”

She put a lot of the success of the show on the number of young people who stand on its committee.

Mrs Bullivant added: “Of the 41 people I’m pleased we have a fairly young average age, which is quite unusual for the committee of an agricultural show.

“They bring energy and fresh ideas.”
