The biscuit maker, which has a factory in Batley, is now second only to United Biscuits.

Fox’s parent company, Northern Foods, reported that figures from the 14 weeks ending on April 3 show Fox’s now has a 10.7 per cent of the market share.

Northern Foods said its planned investment, which will see the closure of the current Batley factory, and another super-factory built either near Batley or in Uttoxeter, was ‘proceeding well’.

A decision is expected in the next few months on whether Fox’s will leave West Yorkshire. If it did, hundreds of jobs would be lost in Batley. Fox’s staff in Batley suffered a blow when it was announced in November 200 jobs would be lost.

A spokesman for Northern Foods said: “It is a gradual reduction of roles, and we’re planning to secure voluntary reduction wherever possible.”

Chief executive of Northern Foods Stefan Barden said: “We continue to invest for the future. The substantial actions we are taking will drive shareholder value in the years ahead.”
