Talented player is honoured by his former club

Family and friends gather at the new bench in memory of Jonny 'Chippa' Peacock, who died earlier this year.

Thornhill United and Kirklees Council have worked together to install the seat at Rectory Park for former player, Jonny Peacock.

The 23-year-old died suddenly in January, leaving everyone who knew him in shock.

Chris Kennedy, who founded the club in 2008 and serves as chairman, said: “We came up with the idea but it was for his family, somewhere for them to go.

“He was a very good footballer, and he could have gone a long way.

“He played in midfield but he was one of those players who could have played anywhere, he was that good.

“It really was a shock when we heard about his death.

“He’d moved away from the club but everyone still saw him around.

“Without a doubt losing Chippa was a sad loss, he was really well liked.

“I don’t know anyone who didn’t like him, it beggars belief that he has gone.

“I think it’s good for the young ones to see this, it’s a talking point and sends out the message that they can talk about their problems.”

The bench, which sits close to the park’s pavilion, bares a plaque which reads: “Johnny Chippa Peacock. Loved more than he knew.”

On Saturday afternoon his family were invited to the park for the unveiling of the bench.

Chippa had played for Thornhill United during his childhood and went on to play for the adult team.

The season before his death, the midfielder had even been given the captain’s armband.

As a mark of respect, the club has even retired his number six shirt, while they also now have The Jonny Peacock Memorial trophy, awarded to those who have given special service to the club.
