A gas pipe was damaged and a telegraph pole torn down.

The wagon driver received cuts to his head but nobody else was seriously injured in the incident. The driver was taken to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Watch Commander Richard Carr, of Dewsbury Fire Station’s blue watch, said: “To look at the damage and the cares being hit it is a bit of miracle there weren’t more injuries.”

Another woman, who was in the car when it was struck by the lorry, was taken to hospital suffering from shock.

The vehicles involved are said to be a silver Vauxhall Astra, a grey Mini Cooper, a grey BMW and a red Ford Focus.

The road reopened at 5.35pm.
