Aitcheson focused on March ring return

Aitcheson was granted his licence back by the British Boxing Board of Control last Wednesday and will now target his return, almost three years after his debut win over Karl Taylor in Bolton.

Speaking from his training base at the Central Boxing Club in Batley, Aitcheson said: “The training camp has stared now. It been a long time coming and when I box I will have had 10 and a half weeks training.”

Aitcheson was jailed in July 2009 after been convicted of GBH but he has learnt from his mistakes and the 23-year-old is now looking to resurrect his boxing career.

The Dewsbury Moor man added: “I want to be as busy as I can. I’d like five or six fights this year and want to be out every couple of months.

“My aim is to get a shot for the English title by the end of this year, I’d love to fight for that belt and I know I’d win it.”

Aitcheson boasted an unbeaten amateur record, when fighting out of the Cleckheaton Boxing Academy, during which time he captured the senior novice ABA title and built a reputation for being a big puncher but his career was halted after just one bout in the pro ranks, a points win over wily veteran Taylor.

Aitcheson will return at welterweight, with his next fight likely to be around the 10st 8lb mark, but eventually he sees himself dropping down to the light welterweight division, where he hopes to be challenging for titles.

Aitcheson added: “I know how important selling tickets is and friends and family have already been giving deposits and I’ll take a good following over to Leeds.”

The Central Club this week celebrated a year since opening it’s doors and these are certainly exciting times for the stable, with four professional fighters training alongside successful novice classes.

Head coach Julian McGowan and trainer John Tallant are putting Aitcheson, Gary Sykes, Josh Warrington and James Ancliff through their paces ahead of a hectic period.

McGowan has promised to bring more titles to the area over the coming months and with the steely determination the whole team have shown, you wouldn’t back against them delivering.

Aitcheson added: “Ive always considered the Central to be my home. Even when I was an amateur I used to come down to this gym for the odd session.

“There is a good atmosphere at training and we you train alongside champions you want to become a champion yourself. We have a good solid base here and training feels comfortable.

“The area which we live in, people can get into trouble but I have turned over a leaf and I am dedicated to my sport. My career begins now and I am determined to bring titles back to Dewsbury.”
