Warrington geared up to fight in front of home crowd

ENGLISH featherweight champion Josh Warrington is gearing up to fight in front of a big home crowd when he meets Devon’s Jamie Speight in the first defence of his crown at Leeds Town Hall on March 22.

Warrington travels from his home in Leeds to train out of the Central Club in Batley and he is set to be backed by a large partizan following.

Warrington has won all 13 of his fights to date, including capturing the English title against Chris Male in November.

The Leeds United fan was invited to parade his belt at Elland Road during the Middlesbrough match before Christmas and the 22-year-old is relishing the chance to bring more success to his home city.

Warrington said: “The atmosphere is going to be unbelievable and the response I have had since going onto the pitch at Elland Road has been phenomenal.

“I have been receiving messages of support from Leeds fans all over, who are saying they are backing one of their own and can’t wait to watch me box.

“Carl Johanneson has left a decent legacy and I’m looking to follow on from that. It’s great now that we have some good fighters coming out of West Yorkshire.

“By the end of March the Central is looking to have two English champions and with people talking about Tony’s comeback these are exciting times.”
