Cleckheaton RU Colts secure league title

Cleck only had 14 players due to injury and illness but they showed great spirit.

Josh White scored two tries for a 10-3 half-time lead but Pontefract fought back to lead 13-10 with two minutes left before a good move led to Connor Wright scoring a try to put Cleckheaton 15-13 in the lead.

Pontefract hit the crossbar with a drop goal attempt and then missed a penalty with seconds left. Cleckheaton play Northwich this Sunday in the Northern quarter-finals.

The Under-15s dominated early on against Old Brods but could not convert pressure into points as they lost 31-10.

Joe Roberts and Oliver Clark tackled well early on before Charlie Humphreys, Dalton Yates, Jordan Rosano, Kieran Dawson and Joe Humphreys were to the fore.

Nathan Smith drove over in the corner but Old Brods responded with a try. Alex Hogg finished a flowing move at the corner and Ben Leitch had a try disallowed before Brods struck before the break.

Tom Wrigley, Jacob Panther, Mikey Bray and Marcus Fletcher were held up and as Cleckheaton tired, Brods took charge. There was strong defence by MoM Josh Healey, Kyle Wright and Ed Maw but Brods scored three late tries.

The Under-10s faced two opponents last week and were on top form. Fine running rugby, passing and great tackling saw this improving team put in great performances to beat Bradford Salem 8-4 and then Skipton 10-1.

Tries came from Robbie Butterworth (five), Tom Oldroyd (four), Josh Riley (three), Luke Hopkin (three), Aaron Jackson (two) and Will Stephenson.

MoM Danny Sharp and George Gillgrass scored four tries each in the Under-9s’ 8-4 victory over Bradford Salem.

William Wagstaff and Marcus Abbot dominated the ruck area with Eugene Rounding and Alex Summerscales putting in some heavy tackles.

Frankie Lawson and Morgan Etherington made good yards Sam Eastwood proved difficult to haul down.

Ayman Khan overpowered the defence with strong running and Jack Wilson ripped the ball from opposition hands at every opportunity.
