Clough U12s in spotlight as they bid to top the Terriers’ record run
JUNIOR footballers from Howden Clough were thrown into the national limelight this week after being featured on Sky Sports.
Sky contacted the Huddersfield Junior League to see if any team was close to emulating Huddersfield Town’s record of 43 matches unbeaten and Howden Clough Under-12s were put forward.
Clough’s terrific run started last season when, as Under-11s, they won all 27 league and cup matches en-route to clinching the Division Two title and the Huddersfield League Cup.
Clough had won five and drawn two of their matches in Division One this season, while also progressing to the third round of the West Riding Cup and second round of the League Cup.
They travelled to Warley Rangers last Sunday and the Sky TV cameras were present to see if they could stretch their remarkable run. Clough recorded a 3-0 victory (report Page 66) and are now unbeaten in 38 matches.
With Huddersfield’s 43-match winning run coming to an end at Charlton on Monday, Clough will be aiming to overhaul the Terriers’ record, starting with a trip to Goole this Sunday when they meet Moorend Hornets in the county cup.
Under-12s manager Mark Pinder said: “The lads only switched from mini soccer to 11-a-side last season but we won all our games on the way to a league and cup double.
“We have continued the unbeaten run this year with six wins and two draws in the league as well as progressing in both cups.”
It has been a memorable few days for the youngsters, who were highly commended for their efforts at Monday’s Reporter Series Sports Awards at Dewsbury town hall.
