Dan Abbott bowls East Bierley into last eight of Heavy Woollen Cup

East Bierley were the first team to secure their place in the quarter-finals after easing to a six-wicket win at neighbours Birstall.

Dan Abbott paved the way with 6-39 when the hosts were bowled out for 134. Paul Martin also claimed 2-22 while Josh Haynes (53) top scored for Birstall.

Bierley knocked off the required runs in just 14.2 overs with openers Matthew West (41) and Sam Gatenby (33) setting the ball rolling and further contributions coming from Ben Walter (29) and Daniel Cross (24no).

Haynes and Alex Drake took two wickets each in vain for Birstall.

Gomersal opener Graham Hilton made a superb 131 as his side scored 362 on their way to an emphatic 286-run victory over Sandal.

He made 108 of his runs in boundaries as he struck eight sixes and 15 fours and shared a brisk opening stand of 127 with Liam Fletcher, who hit 68, including six sixes and seven fours.

Jonathan Boynton weighed in with 52 from 49 balls before Gomersal lost their last six wickets for 43 chasing further quick runs.

Chasing their huge target, Sandal never looked like getting close as they were all out for 76 with Chris Rhodes (3-16) and Richie Wear (3-28) the pick of the Gomersal bowlers.

Hanging Heaton were knocked out after running into some in-form batsmen in the Yorkshire Premier Castleford side.

Electing to field backfired on the Bradford League Premier team as Castleford piled up a big 317-6 total in their 50 overs and went on to win a rain-affected game by 17 runs.

Opener Liam Hyde (89) and Brayden Clark (82) shared a second-wicket stand of 157, before former county player David Wainwright kept the pressure on the home attack with 49.

Hanging Heaton’s innings was hit by rain and they were set a revised DLS target of 208 from 26 overs. David Stiff (44), Nick Connolly (36) and Joe Fraser (34) tried to keep them up with the rate, but it proved too tough as they ended on 190-9.
