Duo battle back to lift the cup

DARREN Ripley and Steve Gardner won the Overthorpe Sports Club Internal Pairs Competition in an enthralling final against Thomas Codman and Phil Berry by the narrowest of margins 21-20 coming back from 20-12 behind.

Codman and Berry raced to a 9-1 lead including a four pointer as Ripley and Gardner struggled early on. Under pressureCodman struck on three consecutive occasions.

From the 24th end onwards Ripley led brilliantly and was well supported by Gardner as they claimed a full house of four points to snatch victory.

Earlier Ripley and Gardner accounted for Alex Wolfenden & Jake Garvey (21-19) and Harold Walker & Nathan Jewitt 21-19 in the semi-final, while Codman & Berry saw off Dave & Heather Jewitt (21-12) and Tony Hammond & Chris Rose 21-14 in their semi-final.

In the first qualifying round of the Father & Son competition at Overthorpe, sponsored by Lottery King, A Denton and S King and B & T Cater qualified for the finals night on Friday June 3.

Denton & King beat C & L Oddy 21-9 and A & A Southwell 21-16 to qualify, while B&T Cater beat S&M Goodall 21-13 and D & N Jewitt 21-18.

In the early clash of the ‘homesters’ Dave & Nathan Jewitt just pipped Darren & Kierran Ripley 21-20 in a thrilling game.

The competition’s second qualifying round takes place tonight (Friday), starting at 7pm.
