Battling Sedge edged out by late goal

Bridlington Town 1

Liversedge 0

LIVERSEDGE were edged out by a goal five minutes from the end of last Saturday’s Northern Counties East League Premier Division clash at title chasing Bridlington.

For long spells, mid-table Sedge looked capable of springing a surprise which would have shaken things up at the top of the table.

Billy Miller’s men had much the better of the first half, when goalkeeper Danny Knight had very little to do.

Even Bridlington supporters admitted after that the result was harsh on Sedge, who gave their all but were unable to prevent a defeat which saw Town return to the top of the table.

Bridlington were without their first and second choice goalkeepers, so an unknown Ben Escritt deputised and was certainly the busier of the two custodians.

Escritt dived to cut out an early Alex Hallam cross, while another effort saw Hallam cross for Rob Bordman but his shot was deflected to safety.

James Hurtley had an effort saved by Escritt, while the lively Rob Bordman evaded several tackles before his shot was snuffed out.

Escritt also dropped on a loose ball just as Cory Larkin was about to pounce.,

Just before half-time Rob Bordman sent brother Dave one-on-one but he blasted wide, when it appeared Sedge were about to take a shock lead.

Another fine Sedge move early in the second half saw Andy Shuttleworth play a neat ball down the line for Hallam to send over a teasing cross but Dave Bordman was unable to get enough power on his header.

Brid manager Mitch Cook had seen enough and, surprisingly withdrew leading scorers Craig Hogg and Josh Greening, who have 34 league goals between them, and sent Billy Logan up front.

A great 60-yard pass by Cook freed Belt and his cross was met by an acrobatic attempt by Greening but Knight was equal to it, and he made another impressive save from the resulting corner.

Bridlington thought they had scored when Palmer nodded in a free-kick at the back post but referee Michael Connell spotted a push and the effort was disallowed.

Knight made another excellent double save and Liversedge looked like hanging on for a deserved point but five minutes from time, Bridlington won another corner and the ball bobbled around the six yard area before Logan stooped to head home.
