Goalless draw sees Liversedge stay unbeaten

Liversedge maintained their unbeaten start in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division with a goalless draw at Handsworth Parramore on Tuesday.

The point earned from a wet Sandy Lane, sees Liversedge travel to Athersley Recreation on Saturday with confidence having won one and drawn two of their opening league games.

The home team created plenty of chances but Sedge goalkeeper Thewlis produced a MOM performance to thwart what had been a free scoring Ambers front line in previous games.

Liversedge’s best chance saw centre back Joe Walton head just over after 10 minutes.

Liversedge showed fight, resilience and composure and at the end of the 90 minutes were the happier of the two sides as they earned another point on the road, against a side expected to be challenging for honours towards the end of the season.

Liversedge’s exploits in this season’s FA Cup were ended at the first hurdle last Saturday when they suffered a 4-0 defeat at North West Counties side Houlker Old Boys.

Jon Rimmington’s men fell behind to a controversial penalty after 26 minutes when a Houlker forward was judged to have been tripped.

The visitors responded well and Archie Watson had a couple of efforts over the crossbar and Liversedge went into the break with hope of pulling the one-goal deficit back.

Just a minute after the break, Liversedge were dealt a huge blow when Houlker broke away and despite claims of offside, the home forward was allowed to race in on goal and slot home.

James Rothell headed wide, Cody Cromack had a shot tipped over the crossbar, while Andy Wood hit a post as Sedge looked to hit back.

A neat passing move saw Houlker add a third 10 minutes from time and they sealed victory with a 35-yard effort which flew over the goalkeeper’s head for the fourth.
