Gomersal shock Congs — Heaton defeated

GOMERSAL produced a big shock in Bradford League Division One last Saturday when they defeated champions Pudsey Congs at Oxford Road.

Gomersal appeared in trouble at 26-3 before teenager Andy Gorrod and Shabbir Rashid shared a 106-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Rashid made 42 but it was Gorrod who stole the show with a magnificent 111, which included a six and 15 fours.

Muhammad Naveed (6-52) was the pick of the Congs bowling as Gomersal closed on 196-8.

Left-arm spinner Ben Platt the produced a match winning bowling performance as he claimed 6-42 to help dismiss Congs for 129.

Woodlands bounced back from successive defeats to record their first win of the season as they defeated local rivals East Bierley by eight wickets.

Last season’s leading wicket taker Chris Brice claimed 4-23 as the slow left arm bowler helped dismiss Bierley for just 145 at Oakenshaw, despite Gavin Hamilton making 34 at the top of the innings.

Sam Frankland then eased Woodlands home as he smashed 95 off just 79 balls as they required less than 25 overs to race to victory.

Farsley are one of only two first division sides who still have an unbeaten record after three matches as they recorded a comprehensive victory over Hanging Heaton at Red Lane.

Jamaican Lorenzo Ingram is proving to be the star of the early season as Farsley’s opening batsman has now scored 368 runs and is yet to be out.

Ingram hit 17 fours on his way to 90 not out and with captain Ian Philliskirk (37no) supporting in an unbroken 152 run stand for the third wicket, Farsley cruised to victory inside 15 overs.

Imran Dawood (40), Mark Lawson (38no) and Joe Fraser (29) were the leading run scorers as previous leaders Heaton had earlier made 178 with Ingram (4-52) and Chris Henry (4-47) doing the damage.

Victory saw Farsley overhaul Heaton at the top and they lead Pudsey St Lawrence by one point.

Cleckheaton slipped to a third straight defeat, going down by one-run to Manningham Mills.

Manningham lost by one run to Hanging Heaton on the opening day of the season and then tied with Undercliffe and they were involved in another thriller.

Mills posted 216-8 thanks to the efforts of Massod Ahmed (61), Farakh Hussain (50) and Iqbal Khan (45no).

Good contributions from Mark Cummins (60), John Wood (48) and Tim Jackson (38) took Cleckheaton close in reply and they required 13 to win off the last over.

They looked on course having reduced that target to two runs from two balls but James Robinson was run out and then Ian Nicholson was dismissed off the final ball of the match for 35 as Mills won by one run.

Hartshead Moor and Spen Victoria warmed up for Sunday’s derby clash with comprehensive victories in low scoring matches.

Robert Warriner claimed 4-28 to help Spen dismiss Idle for just 99 before former Gomersal man Matt Garside (40no) and George Deegan (38no) shared an unbroken sixth wicket stand to steer them to victory.
