Gomersal, Woodlands and Heaton reach HW Cup quarter-finals

GOMERSAL reached the quarter-finals of the Heavy Woollen Cup thanks to a thrilling eight-run derby victory over Spen Victoria last Sunday.

Spen had caused a major upset in the first round by dumping Barnsley out and they threatened another giantkilling when chasing Gomersal’s 236-6, in a match reduced to 40 overs per side.

Opener Peter Jackson set the tone with a fine 85, before Matt Garside threatened to win the game against his former side with a rapid 83.

Left arm spinner Chris Brice claimed 4-20 against his former club, while captain Pieter Swanepoel returned 3-18 as Birstall were bowled out for just 99, despite a top score of 34 from Stuart Clifton.
