Liversedge fall to derby defeat

LIVERSEDGE slipped to a 4-0 derby defeat at Thackley in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division last Saturday.

The contest was settled in a one-sided first half, which saw Thackley hit four goals in 24 minutes as Sedge struggled to cope with the hosts’ pace.

Thackley created three good chances, including one inside the first minute, before they took a ninth minute lead as Nicky Matthews raced into the penalty area and drilled home into the bottom corner.

Dempsey Smith made his Thackley debut, having signed from Albion Sports, and he continually had Liversedge on the back foot with his pace.

Thackley doubled their lead after 15 minutes with an impressive move. Right-back Keenan Ratcliffe broke up the wing and crossed for former Farsley Celtic player Mark Bett, who laid the ball off for Callum White to rifle home.

Smith caught the Sedge defence flat footed as he raced onto a throw-in and fired home the third.

A mix-up in defence was then capitalised on by Matthews as he raced in on goal. His initial shot rebounded off a post but Matthews was quickest to react and slotted home at the second attempt.

Nathan Cartman and Dave Bordman worked hard up front but Liversedge chances were few and far between and the Clayborners’ best effort came from Cartman’s scuffed shot.

Thackley substituted their two pacy forwards early in the second half and Liversedge managed to stem the flow.

Teenagers Andy Clarke and Matty Thompson signed for the first team on Friday and they were handed their senior debuts off the bench.

Heavy Woollen Under-17s captain Thompson showed some neat touches wide on the left, while Clarke did well at centre back and both are promising prospect.

Rob Bordman also made a return having rejoined the club but Liversedge were unable to get anything out of the game.
