Liversedge push Farsley all way in County Cup thriller

Liversedge slipped to an agonising 3-2 defeat away to Farsley Celtic in a thrilling West Riding County Cup tie at Throstle Nest on Tuesday night.

Sedge fought back from 2-0 down to level and also missed a glorious chance to take the tie to extra time after Celtic had regained the lead.

Steve Wales saw an early shot tipped over by Farsley goalkeeper Graeme McKibbon, while at the other end Sedge custodian Christian Thewliss made a terrific reaction save from Lewis Nightingale’s deflected shot.

Farsley struck just before half-time when one-time Liversedge striker Richard Marshall rifled into the top corner.

Jacob Hazel’s excellent 53rd minute finish doubled Farsley’s lead before Sedge mounted a thrilling fightback.

Vaughan Redford levelled on the hour, slotting neatly into the bottom corner, and Liversedge’s leading goalscorer was on hand soon after when he crept in at the back post to tuck home and make it 2-2.

Sedge were level for just two minutes as Marshall teed up Alex Davidson to slot home as Farsley regained the lead.

Liversedge had a glorious chance to equalise late on as the impressive Redford sent Adam Porritt through and he rounded McKibbin only to stroke the ball wide as Sedge’s hopes of a pulling off an upset were ended.

Liversedge held on to top spot in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division last Saturday thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win at Parkgate.

The home side set up to frustrate free-scoring Sedge and although Steve Wales was sent one-on-one, the Parkgate goalkeeper made a good save.

Liversedge goalkeeper Ben Hunter raced back and tipped a shot over from Parkgate’s best chance as it remained goalless half-time.

The deadlock was finally broken as Wales fired a 53rd minute free-kick into the bottom corner and Liversedge did enough to secure a ninth league win of the season.

Liversedge remain top of the Premier Division after third placed Thackley lost 2-0 to Pickering Town on Tuesday night.

Sedge host Garforth Town on Saturday before entertaining Bridlington Town on Tuesday when the club hope to break the record attendance at Clayborn.
