Liversedge suffer cup shoot-out heartache

Liversedge twice looked to have the tie won after leading late in normal and extra-time only for Emley to rescue the tie on both occasions.

Brook Newton’s 57th minute goal looked to be sending Liversedge into the second round until Ruben Jerome grabbed an 87th minute equaliser.

Jordan Townsend put Emley ahead but Vaughan Radford levelled before the end of the first period of extra time and then gave Sedge a 3-2 lead.

However, Sedge were again unable to hang on as Townsend struck an equaliser in the last minute of extra time before Emley won the penalty shoot-out 3-2.

Liversedge slipped to a seventh straight defeat in the NCE Premier Division last Saturday, going down 4-1 at home to Bridlington Town.

Joe Sutton put the visitors ahead after 20 minutes and although it remained 1-0 at half-time, Liversedge hit back two minutes after the re-start through Callum Barron.

The Clayborners were level for just five minutes as Chris Jenkinson restored Bridlington’s lead and Town never looked back.

Ashley Allanson bagged their third after 65 minutes and Sutton netted his second to seal a 4-1 win five minutes from full-time.

Liversedge have slipped to 18th in the Premier Division table but have a chance to end their seven-match losing run, which dates back to September 1, when they host Maltby Main tomorrow (kick off 3pm).

Liversedge are also in action next Wednesday (October 21) when they entertain Pontefract Collieries in their re-arranged West Riding County Cup first round tie, with the winners away to Thackley.
