McFarlane stars for in-form Heaton

HANGING Heaton are the early leaders of Bradford League Division One after they recorded an impressive 108-run victory over Woodlands last Saturday.

Rob McFarlane was Heaton’s matchwinner as he starred with bat and ball.

McFarlane and new signing Joe Fraser got Heaton off to a terrific start as they shared a 91-run opening wicket stand.

McFarlane was eventually out for 63, while Fraser went on to top score with 64.

Imran Dawood (39no) and Chris Goodair (21no) went on to share an unbroken 44-run stand as Heaton closed on 233-5 from their 50 overs, with Woodlands captain Pieter Swanepoel (4-68) the pick of his side’s bowlers.

McFarlane then went on to rip the heart of the Woodlands top order and at one stage he had incredible figures of 7-10 as the visitors were reduced to 50-7.

Tim Orrell (45) and Sarfraz Ahmed (34) offered late resisitance as McFarlane ended with 7-60 but with Mark Lawson (3-44) mopping up the tail, Woodlands were eventually bowled out for 125 and they prop up the table.

East Bierley suffered a first defeat going down by four wickets to Pudsey St Lawrence.

It looked as if Bierley were on course for a big total when openers Gharib Razak (36) and former Scotland international Gavin Hamilton (27) put on 70 for the first wicket.

However, they slumped to 153 all out as Gareth Clough (4-15) and captain James Smith (4-45) sparked a collapse.

St Lawrence eased to their target for the loss of six wickets with Mark Robertshaw making 38 and Smith (36). Kez Ahmed was the pick of the Bierley bowlers, claiming 3-40.

There was a close finish at Moorend when visitors Gomersal sneaked a three-run derby win over Cleckheaton.

Gomersal were guided to a total of 237-6 by fine contributions from Richard Gould (61), Danny Lloyd (39no) and Andy Gorrod (32).

James Lee (32), Andrew Deegan (31no) and Ian Wood (30) were the main contributors for Cleckheaton but they were dismissed for 234 in the 49th over.

Hartshead Moor slipped to a four-wicket defeat to third placed Saltaire in Division Two.

Consistent batting from Joe Hicks (52no), Farhan Khan (47), Muhammad Saeed (38no) and Javed Umarji (37) ensured that Saltaire overcame a Hartshead Moor total of 201.

New paceman Matthew Simpson (3-37) caught the eye for Saltaire while Craig Field (47) and Jonathan Gould (32) were the top scorers for Hartshead Moor.

Spen Victoria edged out Bowling Old Lane by nine runs to secure their first league win.

Leg-spinner Mahboob Hussain helped turn the game in Spen’s favour with a spell of 4-20.

Hussain and Rob Burton (3-39) pegged Old Lane back after overseas player Mapa Bandar (44) and Mohammad Hanif (43) had put them in a strong position when replying to Spen’s score of 208-7.

Former captain Peter Jackson was the key figure in the Spen Victoria innings with a knock of 89, while paceman Mustada Akhtar (4-54) was the pick of the Old Lane bowlers.
