Hanging Heaton win Andrew Bennett Cup to complete Pennine League double

Hanging Heaton completed the Pennine League double last Sunday when they defeated Wyke 27-24 to lift the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy at Featherstone Rovers.

rough the entire Pennine League campaign unbeaten as they won 14 and drew two of their matches on the way to winning the Division Two West title.

They finished six points clear of nearest rivals Greetland Allrounders and went on to complete the league and cup double last Sunday.

Hanging Heaton led 15-10 at half-time against a Wyke side who had been competing in the Central section during the regular season.

Wyke fought back after the break but Declan Tomlinson’s first half drop goal helped keep Hanging Heaton ahead, while he landed a second half penalty to ensure they held on to victory and cap a fantastic season by completing the double.

Adam Johnson led the way with two tries, while Simeon Torr, Terry Maun and William Brooke also crossed, with Luke Dawson kicking the other goal.

The game was part of a Pennine League triple header of finals at Featherstone last Sunday.

Queensbury defeated Kinsley Hotel Raiders 18-14 in the first final to lift the Supplementary Cup and after Hanging Heaton’s success over Wyke, Ovenden triumphed in the Premier final as they overcame Sharlston Rovers 26-6 to lift the President’s Cup.

Once celebrations have died down, Hanging Heaton can plan for life in the Pennine League’s top flight Championship next season.
