Batley Bulldogs were one of a number of clubs who boasted an increase in crowd numbers for the opening round of Kingstone Press Championship games.
The 801 who watched Batley’s opener against Workington was up on the corresponding fixture last season, while almost 7,500 saw Leigh take on Bradford.
Bulldogs coach John Kear is delighted in the interest show at this level, saying: “It has been a great start and there has certainly been more interest in the game.
“The crowd at Leigh was marvellous and we were delighted with out attendance, which was up on last season.
“The sport is looking very healthy at the moment thanks to the new format.”
