Spen Masters bowls finalists are confirmed

Terry Glover (Liverpool) and Mike Leach (Blackpool) were the last qualifiers for this year’s Spen Masters final, to be held on Saturday September 5.

Glover overcame David Gwilliam (Manchester) 21-16 in his qualifying match and has drawn number four for the final, while Leach defeated Hugh Hornby (Preston) 21-10 and drew number eight.

Wraight beat Joe Stockdale and Stuart Hanson before overcoming Robbie Fitzpatrick (Wirral) 21-18 in the qualifying game, while Daykin defeated Brian Lee and Steven Gilroy before a 21-11 success against Roy Nicholson (Halifax).

Overthorpe B overcame a 13 point deficit in the handicapping to defeat Overthorpe C 183-165 in the AB Senior KO Cup final at Hanging Heaton.

The B team were given the perfect with a 21-6 win over 14 year old Casey Lyman-Chap and Mark Lofthouse beating Dave Watson 21-7.

C team’s Darren Ripley defeated Karen Nutting 21-13 and Matty Thorpe beat Rod Clifford 21-9 but the B team took control with Paul Nutting beatingEmily Wilson 21-11 and Heather Jewitt winning 21-14 against Sam Hargreaves.

B team skipper Dave Jewitt overcame C team counterpart Alex Wolfenden 21-14, while Steve Hinchliffe was edged out 21-19 by the C team’s Dave Wilson.

Hanging Heaton’s J Watson and D North (pictured) defeated Viv Smith and G Hird of Hightown in the final of the Spen Valley Pairs competition at Thornhill C&BC last Friday.

There was good bowling throughout the afternoon with Watson and North taking the title.

Scott Simpson and Paul Evans (Willenhall) beat Mark Allman and Kieren Smith (Pudsey/Crossgates) 54-41 to qualify for the intermediate stages of the Mirfield Old Bank Autumn Doubles competition last Thursday.

Monday evening’s qualifying round saw Phil Lee and Mike Tunstall (Liverpool) overcome Duncan Reeves and Craig Gant (Pudsey Littlemoor/Netherton) 49-29.

Yorkshire Girls County bowler Eleanor Broadley, representing Almondbury Libs, came extremely close to winning the British Crown Green Junior Girls Championship title last Saturday.

Eleanor reached the final at Poynton, Cheshire, but was beaten 21-9 at the final hurdle by Natalia Connor (Shropshire).
