Heckmondwike cycle speedway riders travelled to Bury for their final round in the Northern Fours League last Sunday.

Heckmondwike managed to avoid bottom spot in the table by one point, despite utilising junior Tom Whitwam, pictured right, on the senior team and newcomer John Mawby as reserve.

Racing was fast with its usual thrills and spills as one heat saw Stockport rider Matt Lush take a nasty tumble, fracturing his collar bone in the process with Tom Whitwam just avoiding the carnage.

Mawby made his debut for the Division Two team and despite taking a tumble, carried on and scored 15 points making him joint winner on the day.

Fours League result: Bury Meteors 39, Heckmondwike 26, Hull 25, Stockport 56, Astley & Tyldesley 33, Bury Comets 49.

Heckmondwike scores: Justin Naylor 4, Mick Knowles 8, Richard Wells 9, Tom Whitwam 3, John Mawby 2.

n Heckmondwike’s Peter Bradbury made his debut for the Under-13s and scored a respectable five points in his first competitive race.
