Woodlands sink leaders — Rehman spurs Heaton

Things did not look good as Woodlands were bowled out for 139, despite Simon Mason making 37, his highest score since joining from York.

Jamaican all-rounder Lorenzo Ingram (4-21) did most of the damage as Farsley appeared on course to extend their unbeaten record.

However, Woodlands captain Pieter Swanepoel became the first bowler this season to dismiss Ingram as he managed to add to just one run to his total of 368 going into the match.

Swanepoel produced a match-winning spell of 5-24 and with support from Chris Brice with 3-54, Farsley were dismissed for 101.

There was a dramatic game at Bennett Lane, where Hanging Heaton ended the only other unbeaten record in the first division, inflicting a 37-run defeat over Pudsey St Lawrence as they moved second.

Spinner, Umar Rehman was promoted from the second team after Heaton’s overseas man failed to arrive and then opening bowler Nick Summerscales was ruled out for the season after picking up a serious knee injury on the opening weekend of the season.

Rehman returned superb figures of 6-18 as St Lawrence lost their last nine wickets for just 35 runs as they slipped from 112-1 to 147 all out in reply to Heaton’s 184.

Mark Lawson (3-39) supported Rehman after Saints openers Mark Robertshaw (40) and Adam Waite (38) had given the visitors an excellent start.

The home side’s total owed much to the efforts of James Stansfield (38) and Mark Lawson (32), who had to contend with some good bowling from Gareth Clough (3-22) and one time Heaton target David Stiff (3-49).

Bradford and Bingley are the new leaders, just two points clear of Heaton, after they defeated Gomersal by 38 runs to collect a maximum 20 points.

On a bowler friendly afternoon at most grounds, Bingley hit the day’s top score of 304-4 as captain Phil Slater led the way, hitting three sixes and 12 fours in an unbeaten 103.

Chris Thompson hit five sixes and five fours in an aggressive 63 not out as he shared in an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 131 with Slater. Opener Simon Davies supported with 59.

Gomersal had won their previous two matches and replied with 265 as Shabbir Rashid led the way with 84, while Ben Platt (53) also impressed.

David Clow (3-48) and James Davies (3-52) were the pick of the Bradford & Bingley bowlers as they dismissed Gomersal 39 runs short.

Cleckheaton climbed off the bottom of the table as they defeated Undercliffe by seven wickets – a result that leaves their opponents propping up the division.

Undercliffe posted 191-5 thanks to the efforts of Ashley Metcalfe (52), Matthew Bottomley (39), Nawaz Sardar (38) and Ben Heritage (34).

However, Tim Jackson led the way for Cleckheaton with 73 not out as he shared in an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 103 with Ian Nicholson (43no) which enabled their side to overhaul Undercliffe’s total with seven wickets in hand.

East Bierley ended a two-match losing run in the league as they defeated Baildon by six wickets to move up to sixth place.

Tabbi Bhatti (76no) and Harry Smallwood (42no) helped Baildon reach 186-5 in a game which was reduced to 38 overs per side.

Bierley opener Gharib Razak (64no) and Thomas Owens (56no) led home side to victory in 34.3 overs.

Spen Victoria ended Morley’s unbeaten record thanks to an impressive 10-wicket win at Scatcherd Lane.

Former Woodlands player Nicky Rushworth hit 11 fours on his way to 82 not out and he was supported by fellow opener Peter Jackson, who ended 50 not out, which included six fours, as Spen cruised to victory with 8.2 overs to spare.

Morley overseas player Kashif Naveed (39) was his side’s leading scorer, while the former Hartshead Moor duo of Craig Woodhead (3-41) and Joel Pollard (3-43) were the pick of the Spen howlers.

Hartshead suffered a shock defeat at Great Horton, who hauled themselves off the foot of the table thanks to an emphatic 113-run victory.

Overseas player Suleman Khan hit four sixes and 13 fours on his way to 96 and with Khalil Rehman (39) and Altaf Mohammad (30) chipping in with useful runs, Great Horton posted 196-9.

Craig Field (44) led Hartshead’s reply but they were bowled out for just 83 as Raheel Ahmed took 5-27 and defeat saw Moor slip to fourth place.
