Yorkshire’s Daykin wins thrilling final

Netherton’s Ashley Daykin was the toast of Yorkshire bowls last Saturday as he edged out Warwick and Worcester’s Ant Bracken in a thrilling All England final in front of a packed Cleckheaton crowd.

The two counties have a great bowling rivalry and both finalists were cheered on by a boisterous evening crowd.

Daykin started the 99th All England final better, taking an early 5-0 lead, and went on to extend his advantage to 10-5 and then 15-5.

Cheered on by a large Warwick and Worcester following, Bracken battled back, scoring nine unanswered points to trail 15-14

In a crucial end, Daykin scored to lead 19-18 with his jack only for Bracken to score two to take 20-19 lead.

Bracken led out on the brink of victory and with the expectant crowd silent, his first wood was short.

Daykin’s first wood passed Bracken’s to be counting and Bracken’s second wood would also not count.

Daykin held is nerve to land a crucial match-winning second wood and clinch a 21-20 victory to be crowned All England champion.

Daykin earlier beat Derbyshire’s Nigel Iliff 21-4 in his semi-final, while Bracken overcame Cheshire’s Steve Morrey 21-14
