Picture special: Dewsbury Christmas Lights Switch-On 2022

Festive spirit officially arrived in Dewsbury on Saturday with the hugely anticipated switch-on of the town's Christmas lights.

The event, which took place from noon until 6pm on Saturday, December 3, was supported by Kirklees Council and The Dewsbury Partnership.

Activities and entertainment included a Christmas market, children’s carousels, street artists, lantern parade, assembled children’s choir and Bhangra and Bollywood workshop and performance sessions.

The Christmas lights were then switched on at 6pm by the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Masood Ahmed.

Bruce Bird, chair of The Dewsbury Partnership, said: “This was only the third time that The Dewsbury Partnership community group has organised the Christmas Lights and we learn new lessons every year.

"This time it was to expect the unexpected when we had two of our entertainment acts struck with Covid-19 infections at the last minute and unable to attend. This meant some rapid juggling of acts was required.

"Creative Scene were enormously helpful in this situation with their knowledge of the entertainment world and were able to provide last minute substitutions. We should also thank the council who provide a financial contribution as well as many council officers who make things possible.

"It's great to see the smiles on children's faces during the day, but that only happens because of the work of the twenty or so local volunteers who make this event happen.

"It is a great example of how the people of this town can make things happen when they decide to work together.”
