Bamboo stick used in spate of burglary attempts

Four homes were targeted by thieves attempting to carry out Hanoi-style burglaries over the weekend.

Three addresses were hit in Norristhorpe Avenue, Liversedge, all between 6pm on Saturday 22 and 1pm on Sunday 23.

Car keys are taken from a home and then cars stolen from the driveway in Hanoi burglaries. Intruders force their way into homes, or use sticks to hook keys in vulnerable positions through letter boxes.

A car was taken from one driveway after thieves managed to get the keys from inside the house. The Vauxhall Corsa was later found nearby by police.

They were unsuccessful in an attempt on another home when the conservatory door they tried to force open jammed.

The thieves also attempted to fish car keys from inside another home using bamboo cane, but were unsuccessful.

Another unsuccessful attempt was then made in Liversedge Hall Lane.

DI Ian Thornes of Kirklees CID appealed for information on people behaving suspiciously in the area.

He added: “This is also a warning for people to take their car keys and handbags upstairs.”

Officers from Spen Valley NPT have been in the area performing extra checks and giving crime prevention advice.
