Batley man in court on drug smuggling charge

A man has been arrested following a raid by Serious Organised Crime Agency officers investigating a plot to smuggle almost half a tonne of illegal drugs into the UK.

The investigation followed the seizure of an estimated 400 kilos of herbal cannabis and 37 kilos of amphetamines by Border Force officers at Immingham in May.

Yesterday SOCA officers executed a warrant at a property on Chapel Fold, Staincliffe, Batley, where they arrested 42-year-old Ismail Laher who was charged with importing cannabis and amphetamine.

He appeared before Kirklees Magistrates Court and is expected to appear before Leeds Crown Court on August 8.
