Beaten man’s pub help

Kevin Wood, 35, was left with severe head injuries and was unable to walk or talk after he was beaten up in Heckmondwike town centre in October.

He remains in hospital, while his attackers serve a 17 year jail sentence.

Kevin’s father, Trevor Wood, organised a fundraising event at the Crackenedge Hotel in Crackenedge Lane, Dewsbury, with landlords Kim and Stuart Lawrence.

The event, which raised £1,827.63, saw guests take part in a cream cracker eating contest, as well as a range of other games.

Signed shirts of two local rugby teams, the Dewsbury Rams and Batley Bulldogs, were auctioned, alongside a diamond ring which raised £250.

Mr Wood, of Blackers Court, Thornhill Lees, said he broke down in tears when he saw how much people were willing to give to help his son.

He added: “It was a fantastic effort from people I know and people I don’t know. They all backed it.”

The money has been set aside for when Kevin leaves hospital. His father said: “He might need a special bed or a special wheelchair.

“We’ll just get him something to make him more comfortable and make his life easier when he comes out of hospital.”
